Nero d`Avola Cantine Colosi 2020/2021
£16.95 per bottle
ABV 14.0%
Tasting Notes
One of Sicily`s most quality conscious producers with vineyards planted on the volcanic soils of Northern Sicily and on the island of Salina. The red wine is a varietal `Nero d`Avola`, a native Sicilian grape, which has become very fashionable for its rich character and bold structure. There are hints of blueberry, blackberry, plum and vanilla on the nose with a full-bodied spicy palate.
Food
Excellent partner to Mediterranean specialities such as pasta, grilled fish and full flavoured meats.
Region
Volcanic soils and a maritime influence combine to impart a distinct elegance and mineral character upon the island`s wines. Nero d`Avola and Shiraz make reliable, fleshy red wines, whilst Grillo, Inzolia and Chardonnay yield surprisingly well balanced and flavourful white wines. However, it is the uniquely rich and mineral influenced dessert wines that are perhaps Sicily`s greatest contribution to the wine world, from Marsala to Moscato di Pantelleria and Malvasia.
Producer
The winery is located in Messina, run by oenologist Piero Colosi, who with his father Peter, oversee all aspects of winemaking. They have been producing the Malvasia delle Lipari since 1987 with grapes from their 7 hectare farm in Lipari, a small island in the Eolian Archipelago which is noted for its exposure and the volcanic nature of the soil which is particularly good for vine cultivation. The establishment of the vineyard has been done `terraces` style with each terrace finished off by a old dry stone wall. The winery was finally finished in 2004 where total production is less than 100,000 bottles across all varietals.
