Region
The Denominacion de Origen of Ribera del Duero was founded in July 1982 by an organisation of wine producers and growers who were determined to promote the quality of their wines and enforce regulatory standards. Located in the country`s elevated northern plateau, it is an autonomous community within Castilla y Leon. As the name suggests, the region follows the course of the Duero river and includes the areas of Burgos, Valladolid and parts of Segovia. Like Rioja, the region produces wines selected for long ageing and uses the same age categorisation for its products.

Producer
Alejandro Fernandez followed in his father`s footsteps, by originally making wine from his small vineyards. However it wasn`t until 1972 that he was able to establish his own winery, complete with 16th century wine press, which still survives to this day. Today there are some 200 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Tempranillo.

Tasting Notes
Alejandro Fernandez set up Pesquera Bodega in Ribera del Duero in 1972 and has gone on to produce some of the regions best wines. Attractive ripe cherry colour with lively ruby coloured glints. An elegant wine with a velvety mouthfeel and an abundance of aromatic nuances and black fruits such as damson, blackcurrant and blueberries. There are hints of well seasoned fruit, rich hints of cocoa and vanilla. A complex wine which reveals many layers to this wine and an incredibly long finish.

Food
Serve with roasted meats such as lamb or beef.
